Valerie Miller, PhD MS OTR/L (2017 LEND Graduate) is an assistant professor in the occupational therapy doctoral program at the University of Cincinnati. Her experience in the LEND program at Cincinnati Children’s ignited a passion for advancing community inclusion for individuals with disabilities and their families. During her LEND training, Valerie worked on the “Zoo Access for All” initiative at the Cincinnati Zoo; an experience that inspired her to pursue her PhD in rehabilitation sciences. Her current research focuses on providing contextual supports, such as coaching and environmental modifications, to promote meaningful participation in the community for people with disabilities and their families. When Valerie applied for the LEND program, she already had three years of experience as a school-based occupational therapist but was seeking opportunities to grow as a leader, clinician and researcher. The LEND program provided those opportunities through high quality didactic content, interdisciplinary leadership training, and hands-on research and clinical experiences.

In partnership with LEND, Valerie has had experiences supporting various community partners such as the Cincinnati Zoo, the Cincinnati Ballet, The Children’s Theater of Cincinnati, the Boone County Public Library, the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport, and Hamilton County Head Start to create more accessible spaces for everyone.  Valerie believes her path into academia and the successful completion of her PhD. were made possible by her LEND experiences and relationships. She remains deeply grateful to the entire LEND team for this transformative experience that is an asset to our community.

I wanted to share with you that I had my final evaluation with my school supervisor today, and it was the best evaluation I have had in all of my clinical work/learning. I share this with you because my supervisor repeatedly emphasized that she thinks that the difference between me and the students that she has supervised before is that I was in the LEND program. She said that she wishes everyone in our field had the opportunity to be in a program such as LEND, because she can see how what I had learned throughout the year was then applied to my work with our students. I share this with you because while I have absolutely seen the impact that being in the LEND program has already had on my life, both personally and professionally, I wanted you all to know that others in the community are seeing it, as well. The work you do to train us and make us more empathetic professionals does not go unnoticed. Thank you - for everything!
LEND has been such an inclusive environment to be a part of. I appreciate everyone who works together to make it a safe and encouraging safe to learn. Please continue this, as that is truly the best space to gain foundational knowledge. Thank you all for everything!
This program has been incredible and I have absolutely loved being a part of it. The LEND faculty does an amazing job providing authentic and valuable learning experience and I feel so much more prepared moving forward with my work with the disability community.
I think one of the most valuable part of LEND was learning more about the role of our social work friends. I generally knew about social workers being the resource people, but now in the future I will continue to consult extensively with them in order to get my families what they need. Additionally, LEND has increased my confidence in speaking and educating others on my discipline.
This program has taught me so much about ethics and values when it comes to disabilities. Much more than I would have learned by just being in a clinical setting.
LEND exceeded my expectations! This was introduced to me as a program with both didactic and research components, but it was so much more. It furthered my knowledge of other disciplines, but also helped me work on explaining my own discipline and made me think about my role.
